STONER OF THE YEAR!

GET WELL TOMMY CHONG!

In his lifetime, Tommy Chong has dealt with marijuana issues in three distinct ways. He became a Hollywood star using pot as a vehicle for comedy. He served nine months in jail for selling his signature brand of waterpipes. And now he must use marijuana as medicine to treat a serious ailment.
On June 9, the legendary pot comic told CNN’s Don Lemon that he was in “slow stage one” of prostate cancer, a condition that he has been dealing with for several years. He says symptoms first appeared following
his federal prison sentence eight years ago.
He said, “I'm treating it with hemp oil, with cannabis. So [legalizing marijuana] means a lot more to me than just being able to smoke a joint without being arrested.”
He told Lemon that he was drug-free for nearly three years. But it was during this time that he began experiencing health problems. “I know it had nothing to do with cannabis,” he insisted. “Cannabis is a cure.”
Tommy, who has appeared eight times on the cover of HIGH TIMES, the most in our history, remains upbeat. We’re sending positive energy his way as well.
Here are some shots of Tommy from HT editorial director Dan Skye’s archive:

Haze Automatic – Dinafem

Auto-flowering strains are all the rage in Europe and Canada, but they have yet to take off in the US. But as more and more farmers awaken to the convenience of growing cannabis plants that start flowering at a certain height regardless of the light cycle, we’ll see these varieties start to proliferate. Pushing the envelope ever further, Dinafem – a respected and award-winning breeding outfit from Spain – has introduced the world’s first auto-flowering Haze hybrid.
Combining the complex sativa flavor and psychoactive high of Haze with aruderalis-tinged strain’s ability to bloom automatically, Dinafem has created a truly unique, useful and versatile cannabis variety. In most climates, you can simply plant the feminized seeds any time the threat of frost isn’t an issue, then walk away and return 80 days later to find mature, fully formed flowers ready to trim and dry – long before the typical harvest season has even started.

Lineage: Haze x ruderalis
Flowering time: 10 to 11 weeks

West Michigan Enforcement Team investigating Pure West Compassion Club

Holland Township —
Editor's note: This story has been corrected to accurately reflect agencies participating in WEMET.

West Michigan Enforcement Team officials have confirmed that their officers launched an investigation of the Pure West Compassion Club, which included a search of the shop on Monday.

No arrests were made, according to WEMET’s section commander Lt. Mike Harvitt, but “information will be turned over to the prosecutor’s office to determine whether charges will be filed.”

Harvitt said a search warrant was obtained after WEMET received information of alleged illegal activity at the club, which provides medical marijuana to its customers. The Pure West Compassion Club Medical Marijuana Dispensary is at 840 N. Black River Drive.

WEMET is a drug enforcement task force comprised of five teams responsible for Ottawa, Allegan and Muskegon counties. Participating agencies include the Michigan State Police, Ottawa, Allegan and Muskegon county sheriffs’ offices, as well as municipal police departments for Holland, Muskegon, Norton Shores and Grand Haven.

Fire house-based medical marijuana group to hold cookout for AIDS patients

FLINT, MI -- Local medical marijuana advocates plan to hold a fundraising barbeque today to help AIDS patients get certified to use cannabis as medication.
fire station.JPGView full sizeThe long-closed Market Fire Station on Grand Traverse Street, a subject of restaurant and office development speculation for years, has become a medical marijuana club established last month.
The New Market Fire Station Compassion Center of Greater Flint is hosting the event with Wellness AIDS Services.
"Our whole point in this is to try to get all of the Wellness patients that want to be certified, certified," said founder of the club Adam Gerics.
Michigan Supreme Court ruling this month has emboldened many medical marijuana advocates after the 7-0 ruling clarified some of the legal protections that patients have against prosecution.
Gerics established the club last month at the long-closed Market Fire Station on Grand Traverse Street at the Flint River.
He describes the club as a safe environment for medical marijuana patients to gather, medicate and get information.
"I've heard horror stories of people searching for caregivers from Craigslist," Gerics said. "This is an open and relaxed atmosphere and you can sit down and talk to people. We'll be able to help people network without having to worry about some weirdo."
The Saturday barbeque is scheduled from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the old fire station.
Gerics said marijuana is known to benefit AIDS patients by providing appetite stimulation, nausea relief, pain relief and other benefits.
Dr. Robert L. Townsend, a Clare-area physician known as "Dr. Bob" who has certified patients to use medical marijuana in Saginaw and northern Michigan, is scheduled to attend the event.

Breaking News: Richard Branson & Arjan Roskam talk about Dutch Drugs Policy

Barcelona, 10th of May 2012.

Richard Branson was in Barcelona on Wednesday to accept the Cannabis Culture Award on behalf of The Global Commission on Drugs Policy and to move the debate on the war on drugs forward. Mr. Branson, the owner/founder of Virgin, met with cannabis business entrepreneurs / activists, Arjan Roskam (Strainhunters.com), Ben Dronkers (Sensiseeds.com), Todd McCormick and Henk de Vries (TheBulldog.com) at the newly opened Hash Marijuana and Hemp Museum in Barcelona.

The Cannabis Culture Awards are an initiative of the owner/founder of the Hash Marihuana & Hemp Museum, Ben Dronkers. The Dutch Cannabis Entrepreneur created the awards to reward people working towards ending the prohibition of cannabis around the world.

During a Q&A session with Richard Branson, Arjan Roskam asked if he would be willing to put out a official statement to the Dutch government, asking them to re-think their newly introduced tourist ban in Cannabis Coffeeshops. He replied: “As an individual member of the commission, I think that the move by the Dutch Government was very much mistaken and I will talk to the Global (Drug) Commision and see if we can’t put out a statement, a very strong statement saying how big a mistake it was .”

Medical marijuana appeal goes up in smoke

PETOSKEY, Mich. (AP) — A northern Michigan man approved for medical marijuana had a card but not a fence.
The state appeals court has affirmed the drug conviction of Lewis Keller of Emmet County. Police found 15 marijuana plants outdoors on his property. There was some fencing material nearby but it was not made into a proper fence.
Under Michigan's medical marijuana law, card holders can grow 12 plants, but the marijuana must be in a secure place. Keller says he knew he was over the limit but didn't know the plants had to be secured.
The appeals court says the marijuana could have been accessible to anyone passing by.

Wiz Khalifa Caught With Pot

HIGH TIMES 2012 Stoner of the Year Wiz Khalifa was busted with pot at a Holiday Inn in Nashville, Tennessee on April 21.

According to reports, officers knocked on the rapper’s door and, when it was opened, they witnessed Khalifa (Cameron Thomaz) toss a blunt out the window.

Police were originally called to the hotel by the front desk staff who received several complaints about pot odor emanating from Khalifa’s room.

According to TMZ, officers discovered the object thrown from Wiz’s window and “inside the rolling paper was a green leafy substance consistent with marijuana.”

Ultimately Wiz and another man admitted to having pot. Both were cited for misdemeanor possession. They have until May 14 to report to the Davidson County courthouse.

You may recall that Khalifa was busted with pot and possession of drug paraphernalia on his tour bus after a concert in Greenville, NC back in 2010. At the time he was charged with marijuana trafficking. However, the DA dropped all charges after admitting to a slight clerical error in the amount of marijuana found on the tour bus (there is a 10-pound minimum necessary to trigger a pot trafficking charge – Khalifa was caught with a mere 58 grams).

During a photo shoot for HIGH TIMES earlier this year, Snoop Dogg eagerlynominated Wiz for HT Stoner of the Year. Wiz won the coveted award and accepted after his performance at the Cypress Hill Smokeout.

Lavender – Soma Sacred Seeds

1st Place HIGH TIMES Cannabis Cup Indica, 2005

Lavender is one of the all-time-best mellow, violet-colored, indica-dominant strains available to the public today. By the time she’s finished flowering, the leaves will have turned a super-dark purple bordering on black, with bright orange veins running throughout. Dense, winy nuggets of Lavender are a photographer’s dream, and she exhibits beautiful fall foliage when ripe. The taste is of plum and pomegranate, well balanced by the hashy afternotes. A dry toke will also reveal hints of an anise or licorice back end.

Lavender plants stretch a bit more than the average indica, so be prepared. Her relaxing and sedative high can be a bit much for the unsuspecting toker, but Soma says it’s a perfect nighttime or rainy-day smoke, though not recommended for use at parties or prior to activities. For this reason, medical patients looking for help with insomnia should try some Lavender for evening relief.

NO WARRANT NO SEARCH! HOLLAND MAN WINS! SUPREME COURT TOSSES CASE!

Laketown Township —
Charges from 2008 against a Holland man will be thrown out after the Michigan Supreme Court ruled Friday police illegally entered his home.

Angel Moreno Jr. refused to let Holland police into his home without a warrant in December 2008. The officers were looking for a suspect they believed was in the home.

A police report said officers smelled “burning or burnt marijuana” when a woman answered the door. The woman admitted minors were drinking alcohol in the residence.

Moreno tried to close the door, but one officer pushed his shoulder against the door, keeping it from closing, according to court documents.

An officer suffered a torn hamstring and bruised elbow in the struggle that followed, and Moreno was charged with resisting and obstructing a police officer causing injury.

State Supreme Court justices ruled the officers’ conduct was unlawful.

Why hasn’t Obama called off the federal war on marijuana?

One of the more mystifying aspects of Barack Obama’s presidency is the man’s resistance to changing public attitudes — and changes in state and local laws — regarding marijuana.
Polls show that most Americans favor legalization of pot, and studies show that such a step would save tens of billions of dollars annually expended to enforce laws against the stuff.
Then, too, there’s the matter of how such enforcement strains the criminal justice system, complicates efforts to curb the abuse of more dangerous drugs and creates significant hassles for people arrested on marijuana charges.
Simply stated, pot prohibition has been a colossal failure.
But the president remains OBSTINATE on the issue:
President Barack Obama has turned out to be a real buzzkill.
Back when he was running in 2008, Obama said he supported the “basic concept of using medical marijuana for the same purposes and with the same controls as other drugs” and that he was “not going to be using Justice Department resources to try to circumvent state laws.” He didn’t go farther. But he also didn’t do anything to dissuade speculation among medical marijuana proponents who took this as a sign that the man headed to the Oval Office was on their side.
Four years later, the raids on drug dispensaries have kept up — despite a Justice Department memo formalizing low-enforcement priority instructions from Attorney General Erick Holder, who announced in a March 2009 press conference that the raids would stop on distributors who were in compliance with state and local law. Obama never said anything about supporting legalization or decriminalization, but his medical marijuana statements were enough to get him heralded by some in the larger pro-pot community as the best hope for chipping away at the decades-long drug war.
But the hopes that Obama would be a kinder, gentler, more tolerant drug warrior have gone up in smoke.

LETS GET IT TOGETHER! STOP MAKING US LOOK BAD!

JACKSON, MI -- A 48-year-old Leoni Township man was arraigned this week on two drug charges after police searched his property last week and found a marijuana grow operation, heroin and a large amount of items believed to be stolen.
Matthew Jon Lapham remained Tuesday in the Jackson County Jail on a $25,000 bond.
The county magistrate arraigned him Monday by video from the jail. He is charged with two felony counts of possessing with intent to deliver drugs.
More charges could come later.
Authorities suspect Lapham is involved in an extensive “fencing operation,” buying and selling stolen goods, Blackman-Leoni Township public safety Deputy Director Jon Johnston said last week.
Police on Thursday searched his property in the 300 block of Sutton Road off E. Michigan Avenue.
Johnston was not specific about what police found but said officers seized property worth thousands.
The sheriff’s office had been narrowing in on him for more than a year.
Lapham started by transmitting dead or open air, Undersheriff Chris Kuhl said. Later, he would make statements that often were derogatory, Kuhl said.
It is a misdemeanor to intentionally interfere with police radio communications, Chief Assistant Prosecutor Mark Blumer said last week, but the prosecutor's office had not yet reviewed the case for any possible radio-related charges.
In a letter addressed in May 2010 to Matthew J. Lapham, the Federal Communications Commission warned Lapham not to operate radio transmitting equipment without valid FCC authorization.
The commission said information indicated he had periodically been operating under an amateur radio call sign licensed to Matthew A. Lapham of Louisiana, who was serving in the U.S. Air Force in Iraq, according to the letter, found on the FCC website.
In the past, Lapham has been convicted in Jackson County of misdemeanor larceny and assault charges, a felony breaking and entering offense and a firearm crime, according to online court records.

Are medical marijuana restrictions justified? Jackson City Council considers issue

JACKSON, MI -- Medical marijuana always seems to evoke strong opinions.

A proposed medical marijuana ordinance going before the Jackson City Council Tuesday night is doing just that.

The ordinance would eliminate medical marijuana dispensaries, which provide marijuana.

Some, such as CitizenXGen, said that doesn't make sense:

Imagine if your pharmacist told you you have to manufacture your own medication? You have to be a chemist, buy the expensive equipment, laboratory machines, etc. In this case, the patients would be, in theory, forced to buy lights, timers, aeration equipment, soils, fertilizers, clones, seeds, air conditioners, etc…all costing thousands of dollars not to mention the electricity bills.

DrugRaider said abuse of Michigan's medical marijuana law makes the ordinance necessary:

I support this ordinance to ban these dispensaries! They are all a joke and dispense medical marijuana cards to people that 1) don't even see a doctor and 2) people that don't have real medical conditions. I know this for a fact because my 18 year old child has obtained a card and I can gaurantee you he has no medical issues that would require this card!

deidzoeb said the pros of medical marijuana outweigh the cons:

This is so simple. The benefit of people who can be helped by marijuana for legit medical purposes drastically outweighs the potential harm of people using pot for recreational purposes. If the city council wants to clamp down on something harmful, try alcohol. Do a search of Mlive for "pot" or "marijuana" to find how many people have died in this area in the last 24 hours from toking and driving. Then search "alcohol". Yesterday must have been a good day -- you have to look as far away as Plainwell north of Kzoo to find someone dying in a crash with alcohol as a suspected contributing factor. This is not rocket science.

What do you think? Should the Jackson City Council place restrictions on medical marijuana to prevent abuse? Or would such action be an unnecessary burden for medical marijuana patients?
