Medical marijuana advocates protest proposed changes to Michigan law

LANSING, MI — Medical marijuana advocates gathered at the Capitol on Tuesday to protest proposed changes to Michigan’s medical marijuana law.
Lawmakers are considering a package of bills that supporters say would clarify issues that have arisen since the act was approved by voters more than three years ago.
But protestors contend the legislationinfringe on patient rights. More than 150 people attended the event at the Capitol on Tuesday.
“I oppose these bills,” said Joe Cain, of the Michigan Medical Marijuana Association. “I oppose every one of them because they hurt sick people.”
The package of four bills were reported out of committee to the full House last month.
HB 4834 would require a photograph for medical marijuana patient registration cards, extend the expiration from one to two years, and would allow law enforcement officers or officials to access medical marijuana patient information. The bill also calls for the state to contract with a private company to help process and issue registration cards in order to expedite the process.
HB 4851 attempts to clarify the definition of “bona fide physician-patient relationship,” which is required for medical marijuana cardholders. HB 4853 lays out sentencing guidelines and HB 4856regulates the transportation of medical marijuana in cars.
Amy Gasaway, 52, of Macatawa, doesn’t want law enforcement officers to have access to her medical records.
“Even though we have our law, the movement isn’t done, because … we’re being bullied by our lawmakers,” she said.
Michigan State Police Sgt. Dwayne Gill in March testified that officers just need to know whether someone is on the medical marijuana registry; they don’t need to know the exact condition or doctor information.
Other protestors are concerned about the state defining a “bona fide physician-patient relationship.”
Mary Robbins, 52, of Jackson, said her doctor is “terrified” to recommend medical marijuana for her back pain and other ailments, and that the new law wouldn’t help.
“The patients should control their own lives and their own medication,” she said.
The bill’s supporters say it would help ensure that non-qualified patients are unable to get medical marijuana cards.
During a committee hearing last month, Rep. Ken Horn, R-Frankenmuth, referenced a Macomb County case where a doctor allegedly issued hundreds of medical marijuana certifications that were then sold from the back of an appliance store.

WALMART GET SUED BY MAN OVER MEDICAL MARIHUANA ISSUE!
BATTLE CREEK, Mich—
A federal appeals court will hear arguments tomorrow, April 18, in an American Civil Liberties Union lawsuit on behalf of Joseph Casias. The Battle Creek man is acancer patient who was fired from his job at Wal-Martfor using medical marijuana.
Casias says he was wrongfully fired from the Battle Creek store after using the drug in accordance with state law to treat the painful symptoms of an inoperable brain tumor and cancer. The ACLU and the ACLU of Michigan filed the lawsuit in 2010 against Wal-Mart after Casias was fired for testing positive for the drug, despite following the law's guidelines and not using it while on the clock. Casias also says he never worked while under the influence of marijuana.
The ACLU will ask the court to reinstate the lawsuit, which was dismissed by a federal district judge last year, and return it to the state trial court where it was originally filed. The argument will focus around the idea that in dismissing the case, the lower court ignored Michigan's medical marijuana law prohibiting companies, like Wal-Mart, from firing patients who use the drug in accordance with said state law. The Michigan Medical Marijuana Act, passed by voters in 2008, protects medical marijuana patients from "disciplinary action by a business."
The hearing is set to take place tomorrow morning at the U.S. Court of Appeals in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Medical Marijuana Radio Show initiates remote broadcast from Kalamazoo Compassion Center
The metro-Detroit based Medical Marijuana Radio Show (MMRS) will make a historic remote broadcast from Kalamazoo on Saturday April 21st. Hosting the radio show, which is broadcast on powerful Clear Channel Network's AM 1310, will be the MedJoint 3C on West Main Street.
Show host Steve Greene explains why the radio program selected MedJoint for their unique broadcast: "MedJoint has accomplished more for the regular people of Kalamazoo than any other facility I know of." Greene cites the Center's food drive, which has collected over a ton and a half of food for the Loaves and Fishes Food Bank, and other charitable actions undertaken by the Center's leader, Kevin Spitler.
Show co-host Rick Thompson adds, "The MedJoint's leadership in promoting safe access and scientific testing of medicine as reasons why they are considered leaders in the statewide community. They are participating in a study conducted by Wayne State University, and that's cutting edge for our industry."
Why would a radio show come across the state to broadcast from a city that outside of their signal range? Because the MMRS is a podcast, too. Visitors to the MedJoint (who must have a state-issued MMA card to get inside the Center) during the broadcast may become part of the permanent Internet record via interviews and crowd shots during the broadcast.
"We feature the podcast on multiple websites across the state and on YouTube," Greene adds. "Each one hour of broadcasting results on hundreds or thousands of replays." The MMRS is a talk radio broadcast with news and political commentary mixed in with interviews and fun.
MMA registrants are welcome to visit the MedJoint from noon until 1pm on April 21st to watch the broadcast live. "Come on down," says Spitler. "If you are not registered with the State, we'll give you information and referrals about what we do and how it might benefit you or your loved ones." There is no cost to attend this event.
